Membership of any Lions is by invitation, usually from an existing member of the Club and finally with the agreement of the whole membership.
An invitation is extended to a prospective member who then attends a number of meetings as a visitor, so that they can get a 'feel' for the club, to see what work it is involved in and to learn what would be expected of them.
Should the prospective member then wish to join and the Club membership decides to confirm their membership, the new member is then sworn into the Club and presented with a Lions lapel badge that they are asked to wear with pride at all times.
The New Members Sponsor is also tasked with looking after the new member, helping them to settle in to the way in which the Club goes about it's business of serving it's community.
It is the task of the President to try and encourage the new member to become an active member as soon as possible, obviously at first under the guidance of his sponsor and other fellow Lions.
As being a member of a busy service club can involve a lot of commitment, it must be enphasised that a members main duty is to their family, then to their business/job and finally to their Lions involvement. With this in mind, Lion members are expected to give freely of the time they can and use their talents to contribute to the service and fundraising activities of the club.
One other aspect of the Accrington Lions Club that is enjoyed by the members is the social side. The members often meet on social occasions, for example a quiz night or a treasure hunt that are usually organised by the Social Officer. Or they may visit other local clubs that celebrate the anniversary of when that club was frist formed. At these occasion the Lion and his partner put on their best party cloths and enjoy a meal and dance the rest of the night away.
All this adds up to why people enjoy being a Lion, by serving their community, making new friends and enjoying an active social life. All this can be sumed up in the phrase ' FUN & FELLOWSHIP.
