Jane gave a talk to Lion members about the Girl Guides centenary in 2010. To mark this special anniversary there will be many celebrations leading up to this historical event starting off with a tall ships race sailing from Liverpool to Norway on July 21st 2008.
She has been chosen as one of only 50 girl guides in the country to sail on a tall ship but needs to raise sponsorship of £1750 to cover the cost of her trip. Lion members were most inpressed by all the work Jane does for the guides and so decided to start off her fundriasing by donating £500 to her cause.
An invitation has been extended to her to come back on her return from the trip and tell the members all about it.
Hannah Cooper gave a presentation to the club on April 24th 2008 about her project

She will be spending 6 months in Delhi during which time she will be involved with non-formal schools, one outside of Delhi in a village setting and one in the city, teaching and playing with children who don’t have the opportunity to go to school. Hannah will also contribute towards the provision of women’s empowerment programmes (which includes sewing and cooking) and helping to build self confidence and feelings of self-worth in a difficult culture where girls are often seen as a burden to their families because of the dowry’s expected when they marry. I will also be working with the youth.
On returning to the UK, from April until the end of June, Hannah will spend 8 separate weeks with 8 different churches across the country, including West Sussex (Haywards Heath), Berkshire (Bracknell) and Aberdeen, sharing my experience in school assemblies, RE lessons and with other interested groups. One of the weeks will be spent in this area working with my local church, Ernest St. Baptist Church in Church, Accrington, where I am a member.
Hannah told Accrington Lion Members - ‘I am taking this opportunity to live and work for 6 months in a different country and culture to broaden my life experience and hopefully to contribute something of worth to society. I hope it will help me to realise the important issues in life and to appreciate what this country has to offer its young people.
I am a lively person and I hope that, both in India and back home in the UK, I will be able to enthuse and inspire others, especially young people, to make the most of life’s opportunities’.

Message In A Bottle:
This simple to operate scheme enables vulnerable people to feel safe in their homes should they fall ill and need help. Accrington Lions provide, free of charge, small plastic bottle complete with a label displaying a green cross (the internationally recognised symbol for medical care) and two separate self adhesive labels, also with a green cross on. One label is attached to the rear of the entrance door to their home and the other is placed on the door of the fridge. A form is provided for them to complete with vital information about themselves, their medication and their next of kin. This form is then placed in the plastic bottle, which is then placed in the fridge.
Should they fall ill and be unable to give these relevant details to anyone, then when the emergency services attend once they see the sticker on the entrance door or the fridge they know that there is a bottle that contains the form and that can give them vital information to aid the treatment of the person.
Spectacle Collecton:
As part of the Lions Clubs International programme 'Campaign Sightfirst' clubs around the world collect used spectacles for re-cycling. Accrington Lions funded a major programme of spectacle collection by purchasing 24 flip top bins that have been placed in opticians, chemists and other prominent locations around the borough.
Above you can see the project officer Lion Tony Clarkson surrounded a batch of spectacles to be sent off for sorting and grading by the Chichester Lions Club. There are approximately 3,000 pairs of spectacles in these boxes and since the launch of the project Accrington Lions have despatched three other loads of equal quantities. In total they estimate they have collected over 12,000 pairs of spectacles.
Recently a local opticians group came forward to donate a very large quantity of unwanted stock. The 'Spex Opticians' group, whose head office is in Accrington, contacted the Lions and agreed to donate their redundant stock from the groups shops around the area. Principle Mr Kevin Horkin was more than delighted to let the Lions have the unwanted spectacles knowing that they would be put to good use in areas like Eastern Europe, Africa and India. The picture above shows Lion Harry Towler accepting the 10,000 pairs of spectacles from Carole Webster of 'Spex Opticians'.
